Letter to all consultant ophthalmologists and anaesthetists
28 July 2006
Dear Colleague
Re: BUPA Ophthalmology Network
We are pleased to be able to report that we have reached a provisional agreement with BUPA Insurance Limited. They have accepted our argument that consultants do not find the concept of belonging to a network acceptable. In its place, they have agreed to our proposals for joint working at national and subsequently at a local level on cost effective practice and the equitable distribution of the benefits which accrue.
BUPA Insurance Limited however, wish to continue with some form of network arrangements for hospitals and the effect of this on consultants and patients is unclear and will have to be clarified in our discussions with them.
The achievement of this agreement was entirely down to the unanimity of purpose demonstrated by the profession and its successful implementation is wholly dependent on the outcome of the upcoming national negotiations which will be carried out by your representatives. These negotiations will not be starting for about two weeks and we will keep you informed of progress. In the meantime we would advise you not take any action with BUPA Insurance, or your local hospital.
Yours sincerely
