Update on the consultant contract
29 August 2003
The Central Consultants and Specialists Committee (CCSC) decided at its special meeting on 28 August to hold a ballot in the near future of all consultants and specialist registrars in England on the acceptability of the proposed new 2003 English consultant contract. Before the ballot takes place, all the supporting documents relating to the contract will be sent to consultants and specialist registrars in England for consideration.
Relevant documentation will be posted on the web site shortly, including the terms and conditions relating to the contract.
The committee considered alternatives to balloting on the revised English contract, including asking consultant and specialist registrar opinion on the contract developed in Wales. The committee rejected this option, recognising that, in response to a number of requests from the CCSC negotiators, the Secretary of State had made it absolutely clear that the Welsh contract would not be made available in England.
