BMA activity in response to Lord Darzi’s review of the NHS in England

On 9 May 2008, Lord Darzi published a second interim report ‘Leading Local Change’ in advance of publication of the first SHA ‘vision’ for healthcare.

The Next Stage Review has established six national working groups to underpin its work as follows: innovation; leadership; an NHS constitution; primary and community care strategy; quality improvement and workforce planning, education and training (under which there are 4 subgroups). The BMA has secured representation for senior elected representatives – including the Chairman of Council – on the majority of these groups and has thus been in a position to highlight the association’s opposition to Department of Health proposals when necessary.
The BMA has written to Lord Darzi on a number of issues and concerns arising from the review; these include:

The BMA’s Community Care Committee submitted a written response to a set of specific questions regarding carers posed by Lord Darzi at the Standing Commission on Carers on 28 April 2008.
