BMA activity in response to Lord Darzi’s review of the NHS in England

Previous regional activity
As part of the Next Stage Review, in August 2007, Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) in England were instructed to set up eight clinical pathway groups each, to look at the following areas: maternity and newborn care, children’s services, acute care, long-term conditions, staying healthy, planned care, mental health and end of life care.

Following a co-ordinated nomination process led by the BMA locally, 97 places for local BMA representatives to sit on clinical pathway groups were secured.

A BMA briefing pack (electronic) was sent to all BMA representatives, which included relevant BMA guidance, a local contact sheet including details of BMA regional services, regional BMA committees and local medical committees. Other briefing papers available for discussion at regional meetings are available below.

Feedback was sought from local BMA representatives by the Chairman of Council in January 2008. The views expressed have informed our ongoing discussions with Lord Darzi and the Department of Health.

Clinical pathway groups were expected to meet at least 3 times between October 2007 and January 2008. Each group has produced a report, which will be brought together at SHA level providing a local ‘vision’ for improved care pathways across the region.

BMA Industrial Relations Officers have maintained regular contact with SHAs in relation to the local reviews and in many areas, have been able to obtain draft SHA reports, which have then been circulated widely via BMA regional committees.

SHAs published their visions on the following dates: In many areas, this will signify the beginning of a consultation process.

Regional Meetings
In line with this, a series of BMA regional council meetings have taken place across England providing an opportunity for doctors locally to discuss their SHA’s proposals. These meetings were open to all BMA members in the region.

Two briefing papers were produced for discussion at these meetings: Read the feedback from these meetings.
