The following information has been taken from the BMA/Refugee Council voluntary database of refugee and asylum seeking doctors.

There are 1173 doctors registered on the database

852 are male (73%)
321 are female (27%)

Immigration status
324 are asylum seekers (cases awaiting decision) (28%)
425 have indefinite leave to remain (settled status) (36%)
169 have been given exceptional leave to remain (14%)
153 have refugee status (13%)
97 other (8%)

Top six countries of origin
309 are from Iraq (26%)
195 are from Afghanistan (17%)
107 are from Iran (9%)
62 are from Sudan (5%)
47 are from Pakistan (4%)
47 are from Somalia (4%)

17 are living in the East Midlands (1%)
32 are living in the East of England (3%)
629 are living in London (54%)
53 are living in the North East (5%)
136 are living in the North West (12%)
1 is living in Northern Ireland
47 are living in Scotland (4%)
16 are living in the South Central region (1%)
15 are living in the South East Coast region (1%)

Progress towards employment
136 doctors are currently working in the NHS
255 doctors are job ready (ie passed PLAB 2 or are exempt from PLAB and not yet working)
80 doctors have passed PLAB 1 and are waiting to sit PLAB 2
167 doctors have passed the IELTS exam with a score of 7 or above
