BMA books on health

Last updated July 2008

The BMA is not a clinical organisation and we do not carry out our own clinical research or advise individuals on medical conditions and treatments. We have, however, in association with various publishers, produced a range of reference books providing health information for the public.

The BMA’s main reference books, published in association with Dorling Kindersley, are:
  • BMA When your Child is Ill - a home guide for parents (2008)
  • BMA New Guide to Medicines and Drugs (7th edition, 2007)
  • BMA Concise Guide to Medicines and Drugs (3rd edition, 2007)
  • BMA Illustrated Medical Dictionary (2007)
  • BMA Family Doctor Home Adviser (4th edition, 2006)
  • BMA Complete Family Health Guide (2005)
  • BMA A-Z Family Medical Encyclopedia (2004)

A full list of BMA books can be accessed from the Dorling Kindersley website.

These publications can be obtained from any good bookshop or they can be ordered from Hammicks BMA Medical Bookshop online: Tel: (0161) 276 9704; email orders@hammicksbma.com.

The BMA’s Family Doctor Series of health advice booklets is also available in many pharmacies, produced in association with Family Doctor Publications. If you are having trouble in obtaining a particular title then you can contact Family Doctor Publications directly for mail order information, Tel: 01202 668330, or visit the Family Doctor Publications website.

Note: These books are not designed as a substitute for personal medical advice, but rather as a supplement to professional advice, for patients wishing to understand more about their condition. Advances in medical science also occur quite rapidly so some of the information on drugs and treatments contained in the booklets can quickly become out of date.
