Updates on Darzi review for period from 28 April 2008 onwards


23 June 2008
  • This week, three BMA regional councils will meet to discuss the SHA visions as follows:
    • North West on 23 June, Bolton Postgraduate Education Centre, 6.15pm buffet for 6.45pm start;
    • East Midlands/Trent on 24 June, Norton Lodge Conference Centre, Lincoln, 6.45 buffet for 7.30 start; and
    • Southern on 27 June, BMA House, London, 1pm buffet for 2pm start.
  • Next week on the afternoon of Monday 30 June, Lord Darzi will publish the final report of the NHS Next Stage Review.
  • Also expected later next week are two further reports, the Primary and community care strategy and the Workforce planning, education & training report, as well as the launch of the consultation on the case for an NHS constitution, which will run through the summer.

  • This week on 12 June, the London Strategic Health Authority (NHS London) will hold a public meeting where a Joint Committee of PCT's will agree upon recommendations to shape the health strategy for London over the next 10 years. More information on the meeting and the London review.
  • Next week, three BMA regional councils will meet to discuss the SHA visions as follows:
    • South West on 16 June, Holiday Inn, Taunton, 1pm buffet for 2pm start;
    • Yorkshire on 17 June, University of Leeds, 6.15pm buffet for 6.45pm start; and
    • West Midlands on 18 June, Birmingham Medical Institute Library, 6.30pm buffet for 7pm start.
  • On 24 June, the BMA’s East Midlands/Trent regional council will meet to discuss the SHA vision at the Norton Lodge Conference Centre in Lincoln, 6.45pm buffet for 7.30pm start.

  • This week, three SHAs will publish their ‘visions’ for healthcare as follows:
    • South East Coast on 2 June;
    • West Midlands on 3 June; and
    • East Midlands on 5 June.
  • Three corresponding BMA regional councils will meet to discuss the SHA visions as follows:
    • East Midlands/Trent on 11 June (next week), Norton Lodge Conference Centre, Lincoln, 6.45pm buffet for 7.30pm start;
    • Southern on 27 June, BMA House, London, 1pm buffet for 2pm start; and
    • West Midlands on 18 June, Birmingham Medical Institute Library, 6.30pm buffet for 7pm start.
  • The BMA's Medical Academic Staff Committee has recently written to Lord Darzi and NHS London outlining concerns over the apparent absence of medical education and research in plans for polyclinics in London.

  • Also this week, there will be two further BMA regional councils holding meetings to discuss SHA visions as follows:
    • Eastern on 28 May, Madingley Hall, Cambridge (2pm)

  • Last week, new BMA guidance for GPs and LMCs on the procurement of new primary care services under the NHS Next Stage Review was published. The guidance contains details of the new services, the process of their procurement, what local consultation is required and some broad guidance on tendering for these services through the Alternative Provider Medical Services (APMS) contracting route.   • Three corresponding BMA regional councils will meet to discuss the SHA visions as follows:
    • North East on 28 May, Newcastle;
    • North West on 23 June, Bolton; and
    • Southern to be confirmed.
  • The BMA’s ‘Support your Surgery’ campaign is now live. Every GP practice in England has been sent a campaign pack containing posters, leaflets, stickers and a petition which can be signed by patients and doctors in support of NHS general practice. BMA advertising in national newspapers and the trade press will follow shortly. More information about the campaign

  • Last week (8 May), the BMA launched its ‘Support your surgery’ campaign, which will defend and promote NHS GP services in England. As part of this campaign, all GP practices will receive a pack containing posters, leaflets and stickers to help them inform the public about local plans for GP-led health centres. GP practices will be encouraged to ask their patients to sign a petition in support of their local surgery that will be presented to Downing Street in June. Read the BMA press release

    • East of England on 12 May;
    • Yorkshire & Humberside on 14 May; and
    • South West on 15 May.
  • Three corresponding BMA regional councils will meet to discuss the SHA visions as follows:
    • Eastern on 28 May, Cambridge;
    • South West on 16 June, Taunton; and
    • Yorkshire on 17 June, Leeds.
  • This week, junior doctors and medical students, including the chair and deputy chair of the BMA’s Junior Doctors Committee, will take part in a NHS Next Stage Review ‘trainee engagement’ stakeholder event on 12 May 2008.
  • Next week, three more SHAs will publish their ‘visions’ for healthcare as follows:
    • South Central on 19 May;
    • North West on 20 May; and
    • North East on 22 May.
  • Three corresponding BMA regional councils will meet to discuss the SHA visions as follows:
    • Southern t.b.c.;

    • North East on 28 May, Newcastle.

  • Lord Darzi will publish another interim report later this week, on 9 May 2008. The report is described by the Department of Health as ‘…a framing document to identify the key themes emerging from the SHA documents and the overall Review process.’ The final report is expected on 30 June 2008.
  • Junior doctors and medical students, including the chair and deputy chair of the BMA’s Junior Doctors Committee, will take part in a NHS Next Stage Review ‘Trainee engagement’ event, next week on 12 May 2008.
  • BMA regional councils will be meeting to discuss the SHA visions in the three regions above as follows: Eastern on 28 May; South West on 16 June and Yorkshire on 17 June. For more information on or to attend one of these meetings contact the relevant regional office as follows:
