Eligibility to work as a GP
October 2007
We have received reports that some employers are requesting sight of a Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice (JCPTGP)/Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board (PMETB) certificate before employing doctors. However, some doctors do not need or receive such a certificate to work independently in general practice (eg because they have acquired rights). They will be eligible to undertake such work provided they are on the General Medical Council's (GMC's) GP registrar and a primary care organisation (PCO) performers list in the country in which they will be working.
In addition, a PCO should not be requesting a PMETB certificate, but rather should be checking the GMC's GP register, when considering a doctor for inclusion on its performers list.
