Medical Academic Staff Committee Annual Report 2006-07
Chairman’s welcome
Dear Colleague
I am pleased to introduce the annual report of MASC for the 2006 session. It has been my privilege to chair a committee of dedicated, hardworking clinical academics who have spent so much of their spare time in pushing forward the agenda of academic medicine.
If you are ever asked ‘what does the BMA do for clinical academics?’ this summary of the activities of the MASC in the last session will help to illustrate the depth of activity of your committee.
The MASC is the team that enacts the policy set at our annual conference (the Conference of Medical Academic Representatives), developing well thought out documentation and evidence to support the representation of clinical academic staff in a variety of settings. It is backed up by our hard working secretariat team who are listed at the back of this document.
This year we have applied ourselves to the support of clinical academic careers, the development of a strategy for research in the NHS and above all else making sure that research and education were topics discussed prominently within the BMA and other bodies. All the members of the committee have had a busy year in actively representing your interests including meeting members of parliament, attending meetings with the Royal Colleges, Universities and officials of government.
In addition to this we have been working hard to improve our systems of local representation and communication, especially through meetings with BMA regional services staff.
There is always room for improvement and I would like to extend an invitation to you to comment on the annual report and the activities of MASC. Please send any comments care of our secretariat at info.masc@bma.org.uk
With best wishes
Professor Michael Rees
