BMA Research Grants FAQs


When do details about the grants become available?
Each year in December the details (including terms and conditions) can be found on the BMA website

When can I apply for a Grant?
From the point that it is advertised on our website (in December)

When is the closing date for applications?
Early to mid-March – check the BMA website once the details are up for the exact date.

When will the grant winners be announced?
The successful applicants will be informed in June. Unsuccessful applicants will be informed in late June/early July.

When will the money be available?
Money will be available September of the year that the Grant is awarded.

How long will the money be available for?
3 years.

Would the research grants provide funding to cover tuition costs for medical education / postgraduate education / post doctoral education?
The BMA Research Grants are only available to support research, which is either in progress or proposed and are not available for sponsorship of postgraduate education. For alternative sources of funding you should look at the Directory of Grant Making Trusts and the Grants Register, which should be available in any good reference library including the BMA’s own library. There are several funding databases that you can search online and these are listed on our web site under “Other sources of funding

Would the grants provide funding for overseas education/training?
The BMA Research Grants are not available for this purpose. You should contact your Royal College for information on other organisations that may be able to assist you. There is also the Directory of Grant Making Trusts and Grants Register, which should be available in any good reference library including the BMA’s own library. Alternatively, there are several funding databases that you can search online and these are listed on our web site under “Other sources of funding

Would the grants cover the cost of attending a conference overseas?
The BMA grants are only available to support research, which is either in progress or proposed, and do not provide funding solely for travel or accommodation expenses.

Would the grants provide funding for a research project to be carried out outside the UK?
Some of the grants are available for research outside the UK; however some are restricted to the UK only. Please check the terms and conditions of the specific grant for clarification.

Would the grants cover the cost of information technology?
The purchase of computer hardware cannot be funded by the grant. Software will be covered as part of expenses/equipment. Please see the terms and conditions of the grants for further details. Receipts for expenses must be submitted when claiming money from the grants.

Will the grants cover salary costs?
The grants will cover salary costs. Please see the terms and conditions of the grants for further details.

Can more than one person apply for a grant?
Applications are welcomed from joint applicants. Joint applicants must return one completed joint application form, with two references per applicant. It is fine for all applicants to have the same referees.

Can a project supervisor also act as a referee?
Yes

Do application forms have to be sent by post?
Forms can either be sent via post, fax or electronically. They must be received by 5.00pm on the deadline day. If sending the forms electronically they must include a scanned signature where appropriate

Can an individual apply for more than one grant?
Yes. If an applicant is applying for more than one grant they will need to fill out an application form for each grant they are applying for. Referees can be the same for the different grants.

Are the grants available to non-BMA members?
Please check the terms and conditions of individual grants. Some are open to non-members; some are open to non-members who are doctors (i.e. registered with the General Medical Council: please include the GMC registration number on the application form); and some are only open to BMA members. However, for certain grants, a non-member can apply if they are working with a BMA member on the project: please ensure that their BMA membership number is included on the application form. Check the terms and conditions for the particular grant to see if this is the case.
