BMA research grants for scientists and medical practitioners

Through its Board of Science, the British Medical Association offers grants for medical research - details are given below of the grants that were available in the previous year (2007/08). All grants are for research that is either in progress or for prospective research, and are not normally made solely for the purpose of paying travelling expenses. In addition, funding for computer hardware, training courses or further education is excluded.
The Research Grant application process for 2007/08 is now closed. An advertisement indicating which grants are available for the coming year will be placed in the British Medical Journal in January 2009 - details will also appear on this website in December 2008. The closing date for receipt of applications for grants in 2009 will be early March.

Doris Hillier - £50,000
To assist research into rheumatism and arthritis.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK.
H C Roscoe - £50,000
To promote research into the elimination of the common cold and/or other viral diseases of the human respiratory system.
Applicants must be members of the BMA or non-medical scientists working with a member of the BMA.
Joan Dawkins - £55,000
To assist research into suicide in men.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners or non-medical scientists. Projects must relate to the UK only.
Josephine Lansdell - £50,000
To assist research in the field of heart diseases.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA.
Helen H Lawson - £50,000
To assist research in the field zoonosis – the interaction between animal diseases and humans
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA.
Margaret Temple - £55,000
To assist research into schizophrenia.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners or non-medical scientists. Projects must relate to the UK only.
Vera Down - £50,000
To assist research into neurological disorders.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK.
The James Trust - £55,000
To assist research into asthma.
Applicants must be members of the BMA.
Gunton - £25,000
To assist research into public health relating to cancer.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners or non-medical scientists in the UK.
Strutt & Harper - £35,000
To assist research into health inequalities, specific to ethnic minority health.
Applicants must be registered medical practitioners in the UK and a member of the BMA.
Overweight & Heart Disease Research Trust (OHRT) / BMA - £10,000
OHRT is a charity devoted to the study of obesity and its relationship to medical conditions, in particular heart disease. Original projects that are designed to make a contribution to the knowledge of obesity, and obesity related medical disorders are invited.
Applicants must be members of the BMA or non-medical scientists working with a member of the BMA.
